What to Expect from the Root Canal Procedure

Your Dentist Will Drill a Small Hole in the Top or Bottom of the Tooth.
Your damaged pulp tissue lies far beneath your tooth’s surface, so your dentist will need to drill a small hole in your tooth in order to gain access to the internal tooth structure. Next, your dentist will use a tool called an apex locator to measure the size of your root chamber.

Your Dentist Will Remove All of the Tooth’s Nerve Tissue and Pulp.
During the root canal procedure, your dentist will use a series of small files to remove all of the damaged pulp tissue through the drill opening. These files also allow your dentist to shape the root canal so that it is ready to be filled with a sturdy, artificial material.

Your Dentist Will Fill the Root Canal with Supportive Material.
After the damaged pulp tissue and nerve root have been removed, your dentist will fill your root canal with a substance called gutta-percha. Because this material is strong and flexible, it will provide support to the internal structure of your tooth.

Your Dentist Will Place a Crown on Top of Your Tooth.
In the final step of your root canal procedure, your dentist will cement a porcelain or ceramic crown to your treated tooth. This crown will resemble your natural teeth and protect your treated tooth from any damage following the procedure.
